The lattice sets rhythm and scale, while the translucent surface changes daylight, privacy, and the feeling of depth. Traditional references can be preserved or simplified for a contemporary interior. Every line has a purpose, and the finished screen should make the whole space feel calmer.
Shoji is practical in New England, too. One client in Harvard had a sunroom that froze every winter and went unused; a layer of shoji over the glass works like double glazing, and the room became usable again. Paper and glass together hold the warmth.
